Courtyard tensile structures, also known as courtyard shade structures, courtyard canopies, courtyard roofing or open courtyard covers, provide a fabric roof over the open court of a home, hotel, school, office or hospital. Steel arches, columns or wall brackets support the tensioned membrane. The fabric gives shade, and a coated membrane also provides overhead rain cover, while open sides allow air to pass through the space. Coverage can be planned around sitting, dining, assembly or other courtyard activities, with attention to the areas that should stay open for circulation or planting.
ShadeCo India Private Limited is a courtyard tensile structure manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install arched courtyard roofs, conical and hypar courtyard canopies, side-supported courtyard covers, shade sails for courts and large-span courtyard roofing, for villa and bungalow courtyards as well as for hotel, campus, hospital and commercial courts. The intended use helps determine whether the roof should cover the whole court or a selected area within it.
Good courtyard design starts with how the court is used. A family courtyard used for sitting and drying clothes needs a different cover from a hotel court used for dinners or a school court used for assembly. We also check the height of the surrounding walls, whether the court has trees or planting that still need sun and rain, where the existing floor drains are, and whether the walls can carry brackets or the cover should stand on its own columns.

Why Courtyards Need Tensile Shade Structures
A courtyard surrounded by walls traps heat. Through an Indian summer day the paving and the walls around the court absorb sun, and they keep giving off that heat well into the evening, so the space that should be the coolest part of the property often feels like the hottest. In the monsoon, rain pours into the open court, water splashes into the rooms and corridors around it, and furniture cannot be left outside.
A tensile cover deals with this without turning the court into another closed room. Shade on the floor and lower walls can help reduce how much heat builds up during the day, and a waterproof membrane keeps the court and the doors around it dry. Air still moves in at the edges, daylight still reaches the court, and the space becomes somewhere to sit, eat, study, hold small functions or wait in comfort.
Types of Courtyard Tensile Structures
Courtyard covers vary with the shape and size of the court, the height of the walls around it and whether columns can stand inside the space.
Arched Courtyard Roof
Steel arches or arched trusses span from one side of the court to the other, and the membrane is stretched between them, as in the photos above. It suits long, rectangular courts in offices, hospitals, colleges and commercial complexes, and it keeps the floor completely free of columns.
Conical Courtyard Canopy
The fabric rises to a peak above the centre of the court, either on a single mast or a ring held by cables. A cone suits square and round courts in villas and hotels, and the raised centre lets warm air rise and escape.
Hypar Courtyard Canopy
Two corners are fixed high and two low, so the fabric forms a twisted saddle. One hypar can cover a small court, and several can be combined over a larger one, giving a modern look with gaps for air between the panels.
Side-Supported Courtyard Cover
The cover is carried from brackets on the surrounding walls or from columns along the edges, so nothing stands in the middle of the court. It is the usual choice for homes, schools and restaurants where the floor is used for seating, tables or gatherings.
Courtyard Shade Sails
Triangular or square sails are fixed between walls and posts at different heights. They give lighter, partial shade, suit courts with trees or planting, and can be layered in colours. Explore our shade sails.
Large-Span and Custom Courtyard Roofing
Big institutional and commercial courts are roofed with long-span arched trusses or cable systems and a heavier membrane. Custom designs also cover irregular courts, add lighting for evening use, or link the court to surrounding corridors. For a roof over an internal building void, see our atrium tensile structures.
Custom Courtyard Shade Design: Coverage, Airflow and Water
The first choice is full or partial cover. A full cover gives a dry court in every season, while a partial cover or a set of sails leaves openings for trees, planting and the sky view many owners want to keep. The cover is usually set a little above the surrounding parapet or roof edge, or below it with a gap all round, so hot air can leave the court instead of collecting under the fabric.
Water needs careful planning because a courtyard has nowhere to send it except its own drains or the roofs around it. The membrane is sloped to set low points, where gutters and downpipes connect to the existing drainage, and the water is kept away from doors, windows and verandahs that open onto the court. Wall fixings are positioned to suit the surrounding masonry, and steel touching the walls is finished to avoid rust stains on the facade.
PVC vs PVDF Fabric for Courtyards
Both coated fabrics keep a courtyard dry and filter the daylight coming in. The choice comes down to budget, how visible the roof is from the rooms around it and how easily it can be reached for cleaning.

Benefits of Courtyard Tensile Structures
A covered courtyard gives a property extra usable space without building new walls or a heavy roof.
- A Court You Can Use Daily: Shade and rain cover make the court practical for sitting, dining, study or small events.
- Less Heat Build-Up: Shading the paving and walls can help keep the court and nearby rooms more comfortable.
- Dry Doors and Corridors: Rain no longer splashes into rooms and verandahs around the court.
- Air and Light Kept: Open edges and translucent fabric keep the court airy and bright.
- No Heavy Construction: A membrane cover avoids adding a concrete slab or permanent walls to the building.
- Matches the Property: Fabric colour, frame finish and roof shape are chosen to suit the architecture.
Applications of Courtyard Tensile Structures
Villas, bungalows and farmhouses use courtyard covers over central family courts, while apartment complexes shade internal courts used by residents. Hotels and resorts cover courtyards for breakfast seating, dinners and small celebrations, and restaurants and cafes roof inner courts to add seating that works in summer and the monsoon.
Schools and colleges cover courts used for assembly, recess and activities, and hospitals shade courtyards where patients and families wait between appointments. Offices roof internal courts to create breakout and lunch areas, and commercial complexes, heritage buildings and public offices use courtyard canopies to make their central open spaces usable throughout the year.
Courtyard Tensile Structure Price in India: What Affects the Cost
Courtyard cover cost depends mainly on the size of the court and how it is supported. A wall-bracketed cover over a small villa courtyard needs little steel, while a column-free arched roof across a large campus court needs long-span trusses and heavier fabric.
The fabric type and the choice of full or partial coverage affect the final quotation. We also consider the height of the surrounding walls and their condition where fixings are needed. Gutters and connections to existing drains, lighting and the steel finish are included in the cost. Access for lifting material into an enclosed court and the project location also affect the quotation.
For an estimate, please send the courtyard length and width, the height of the walls or roof around it, photographs of the court and its edges, whether you want full or partial cover, and the property location.
How We Design and Install a Courtyard Tensile Structure
Courtyards are usually reached only through the building, so material movement, lifting and protection of floors and finishes are planned before work starts.
- Step 1 – Courtyard survey: We measure the court and surrounding walls, note doors, windows, trees and drains, and check how material can be brought in.
- Step 2 – Design options: We propose the cover type, full or partial coverage, fabric and colour, with drawings sent to you for sign-off.
- Step 3 – Engineering: Our engineers calculate arch, column and bracket sizes from the court width and the IS 875 (Part 3) wind pressure for the city.
- Step 4 – Fabrication: Steel parts are produced and coated at our factory while the membrane is patterned and welded to the court's exact shape.
- Step 5 – Installation: Floors and finishes are protected, brackets or columns go in first, then the steel is assembled, the membrane is pulled tight and the gutters are tied into the drains.
- Step 6 – Handover: We check tension, edge gaps, water flow and fixings, and explain basic cleaning and inspection.
Courtyard Tensile Structure Design and Installation Solutions
ShadeCo India covers courtyards of every scale, from a small family court in a villa to long arched roofs over campus and hospital courts. Measurements, drawings, steelwork, membrane and installation are all handled by our team.
Why Work with ShadeCo India
In business since 2010, ShadeCo India is ISO 9001:2015 certified and brings over 15 years of tensile design, fabrication and installation work. With engineers, fabricators and installers on our own payroll, one team answers for the courtyard cover from the site visit to the final check.
Delhi Public School, Food Corporation of India, L&T, TATA, Adani, Al-Karim University, Indian Oil, Omaxe, VIVO, Lakhani, Indian Railways, Reliance and several other organizations across India are among the clients we have served.
Because courtyards sit inside finished buildings, we take care with the details owners live with: neat wall fixings, no rust marks, water that goes into the drains rather than the rooms, and fabric that sits tight without flapping. Before we hand over, the finished cover is compared with the signed-off drawings, and most courtyard covers are delivered within 3–6 weeks, depending on how large and how customised the design is.
Owners planning other covered spaces can also look at our residential shade structures, atrium tensile structures, pergolas and outdoor living and polycarbonate roofing.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - Courtyard Tensile Structures
A courtyard tensile structure is a fabric roof stretched over the open court of a home, hotel, school, office or hospital. It is supported on steel arches, columns or wall brackets, shades the court, keeps out rain when coated fabric is used, and leaves the edges open so air keeps moving through the space.
It varies with the courtyard size, the support method, full or partial coverage, PVC or PVDF fabric, the height of surrounding walls, drainage connections, lighting and the location. Send ShadeCo India the court dimensions, wall height and photographs to receive a quotation.
Not when it is designed with ventilation. ShadeCo India leaves an air gap between the membrane and the surrounding walls or parapet so warm air can escape, and conical or hypar shapes help it rise out.
Yes. Side-supported covers hang from brackets on the surrounding walls or from columns at the edges, and arched roofs span the court from side to side. Our engineers first check that the walls can take the load; if not, independent edge columns are used.
With PVC or PVDF fabric, the membrane is sloped to fixed low points, and gutters and downpipes carry the water into the existing courtyard or roof drains, away from doors and verandahs. If plants in the court need rain, a partial cover with open sections can be designed instead.
The steel frame has an expected structural service life of 25–30 years with periodic care. PVDF fabric carries a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms, while PVC fabric life depends on the grade selected.
A courtyard project is typically delivered in 3–6 weeks, depending on its size and customization. That includes drawing approval, workshop fabrication and installation, with floors and finishes around the court protected while work is under way.
Clear leaves and dust from the top of the fabric and from the gutters regularly, and rinse the membrane with water and a mild cleaner when it looks dull. Check fabric tension, wall brackets and bolts before the monsoon. ShadeCo India also offers annual maintenance contracts.
