Sports shade structures, also called sports court shades, court covering structures or sports court roofing, are roofs built over courts and play areas, most often a tensile fabric membrane on a steel frame. They keep players out of direct sun and rain while the open sides let air through, so a court that was only playable early in the morning and in the evening can be used all day and through most of the monsoon. Schools, academies, clubs and housing societies use them over outdoor courts and practice areas.
ShadeCo India Private Limited is a sports shade structures manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install badminton, tennis, basketball and volleyball court shades, cricket practice net covers, skating rink roofs, school playground shades and multi-sport court covers, in open, semi-enclosed or enclosed layouts for schools, colleges, sports academies, clubs, housing societies and sports complexes.

Every sport needs a different roof. A badminton court needs height and even light with no wind, a tennis court needs a long span, and a playground needs shade more than height. Select a structure below to enquire about your court or facility.

A single large roof covering a multi-purpose court or several courts side by side, used for basketball, volleyball, futsal and badminton. Arched or curved frames give a wide clear span with columns only along the edges.
Court Sizes and Shade Structure Planning
Before ShadeCo India designs a court cover, we start from the court itself: its playing area, the run-off space around it, and how high the ball or shuttle goes. Columns are kept outside the run-off so players never run into them, and the roof height is set for the level of play, higher for competition courts than for school and club use. The table below shows the standard playing areas the roof is planned around.
| Sport |
Standard Playing Area |
What the Roof Is Planned Around |
| Badminton (doubles) |
13.40 m × 6.10 m |
Clear height for high shuttles, no wind across the court, even light |
| Tennis (doubles) |
23.77 m × 10.97 m |
Long span with space behind the baselines for lobs and serves |
| Basketball |
28 m × 15 m |
Height over the hoops and clear sidelines for fast play |
| Volleyball |
18 m × 9 m |
Free height above the net for high balls |
| Cricket Nets |
Per lane, as per the net layout |
Length of the run-up and bowling lane, with netting fixed to the frame |
Beyond size, each structure can be set up as one court or several side by side under a continuous roof, with the fabric colour, frame finish and side treatment chosen for the facility.
Open, Semi-Enclosed and Enclosed Court Covers
Most outdoor courts are covered with an open-sided roof, which keeps off sun and rain while letting air move freely. This suits tennis, basketball, volleyball and school courts, where a breeze helps players stay cool.
Badminton is different, because even a light wind moves the shuttle. Badminton courts are often semi-enclosed with fabric or netting on the sides, or fully enclosed to create an indoor-style hall. Side netting is also used on basketball, volleyball and cricket structures to keep balls inside, and roll-down side curtains give extra protection from driving rain.
Benefits of Sports Shade Structures
For schools, academies and clubs, a covered court means more hours of play from the same space.
- More Playing Hours: Courts can be used through the hot middle of the day, not only in the early morning and evening.
- Play Through Light Rain: A waterproof roof keeps the surface dry, so sessions continue in the monsoon instead of being cancelled.
- Cooler Court Surface: Shade keeps synthetic and concrete courts from heating up, which is easier on players' feet and joints.
- Less Glare: Players can follow the ball or shuttle without looking straight into the sun.
- Longer Court Life: Protection from direct sun and rain slows the wear and fading of court surfaces.
- Quick to Build: A steel frame and fabric roof go up much faster than a closed indoor hall, often over an existing court.
Applications of Sports Shade Structures
Schools and colleges are among the most common users. They cover badminton and basketball courts, assembly areas and playgrounds so that PE periods and practice can run regardless of weather. Sports academies and coaching centres use covered courts to run full-day training batches, and clubs and housing societies add them to make their courts usable for residents through the year.
Larger sports complexes and stadiums use them over practice courts, warm-up areas and cricket nets. Skating rinks and children's play areas in parks and malls are covered for the same reason: shade and dry floors make the space usable for longer.
Sports Shade Structure Price in India: Factors That Affect Cost
The cost of a court cover depends mostly on the area and the clear height. A tennis court has more than three times the playing area of a badminton court, so its roof costs more, and a taller structure needs heavier columns and trusses than a low playground shade.
The fabric is the next factor: waterproof PVC or PVDF membranes cost more than HDPE shade fabric, which keeps off sun but not rain. Side netting, fabric walls and full enclosures add to the total, as do foundations, the site's wind zone and the project location. Covering several courts under one roof usually costs less per court than covering each separately.
For a quote, tell us the sport and number of courts, the court dimensions, whether you need rain cover or shade only, and the location of the facility.
How We Plan and Build Court Covers
Many court covers go over courts that are already in use, so the work is planned to protect the playing surface and keep disruption short.
- Step 1 – Court survey: We measure the court and run-off, check the space around it for columns and foundations, and note nearby buildings, trees and overhead lines.
- Step 2 – Layout and height: Column positions, roof height, roof shape and side treatment are fixed in drawings, based on the sport and the level of play.
- Step 3 – Engineering: The frame and foundations are designed for the site wind speed as per IS 875 (Part 3), and drainage is planned so rainwater runs away from the court edges.
- Step 4 – Fabrication: Steel columns and trusses are fabricated and coated, and the fabric roof and any side panels are cut and welded to size.
- Step 5 – Foundations and erection: Foundations are cast outside the playing area, then the frame is erected and the roof fabric is fixed and tensioned, with care taken to protect the court surface.
- Step 6 – Handover: After a final check of clearances and drainage, the court is handed back with guidance on cleaning the fabric and inspecting the structure.
Sports Shade Structure Design and Installation Solutions
ShadeCo India designs, fabricates and installs sports shade structures as a manufacturer, supplier and contractor. Our projects range from a single school badminton court to rows of covered courts at sports academies and multi-sport complexes.
Why Schools and Sports Academies Choose ShadeCo India
ShadeCo India Private Limited has been building tensile and fabric structures since 2010 and is ISO 9001:2015 certified. Our engineers plan each roof around the sport played under it, and our own fabrication and installation teams build it, so the clearances on the drawing are the clearances on the court.
For schools and institutions, we can also cover playgrounds, assembly areas, walkways and parking on the same campus, which keeps the look consistent and the work with one contractor.
For related shade and roofing options, you can also explore our tensile structures, shade sails, polycarbonate roofing, and badminton court shades.
School Roofing and Sports Shade References
The large-span tensile roof at Arwachin Senior Secondary School, Vivek Vihar, Delhi, covers a school assembly area. It is a reference for campus roofing where a broad covered area must accommodate people without obstructing everyday movement.
Our projects page includes this school installation and other institutional canopy work. For a sports facility, the proposed roof needs a separate brief covering court dimensions, playing height, run-off space and lighting. These requirements guide the support layout and the extent of cover.
Sports Shade Structures Across India
Schools, academies and clubs are everywhere, and so is the need for covered courts. ShadeCo India takes up sports shade projects across the country, including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala, along with West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Goa and the North-East.
Much of this work is for schools and academies in growing cities, where land for new indoor halls is scarce and covering an existing court is the practical choice. Projects come from metro areas such as New Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata, from cities like Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Dehradun, Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Kochi and Coimbatore, and from district towns where a school or club wants its first covered court.
A court cover is built from standard steel sections and factory-made fabric, so the same design and installation method works wherever the court is. Send us the location of your facility, and we will plan the project in the same way.
