Charcoal aluminium pergola with a slatted roof over outdoor lounge seating
Retractable pergola with a partially folded cream fabric roof above outdoor dining
White slatted poolside pergola shading sun loungers beside a swimming pool

A pergola is an open outdoor structure of posts and overhead beams that shades a garden, terrace, patio or poolside without closing it in. The roof can be fixed slats that filter the sun, louvers that tilt open and shut, a fabric cover that slides back, or polycarbonate that keeps out rain. Because the sides stay open, air keeps moving under it, which makes a pergola well suited to outdoor seating in warm weather.

For villas, rooftop terraces, resort lawns, restaurant courtyards and pool decks, ShadeCo India Private Limited designs and installs pergolas in aluminium and steel. Each one is built to the size of the space, with fixed slats, motorised louvers or a retractable fabric roof depending on how the area will be used.

Pergola Sizes, Roofs and Custom Features

Every pergola from ShadeCo India starts with the space it has to fit. We measure the area, decide where the posts can stand without blocking movement or views, and set the height so the pergola feels open rather than low. The roof type is then chosen by how much sun, air and rain you want to let through.

Frames can be finished in black, grey, white or a wood-grain look to match the house or the landscaping. LED strip lights can be built into the beams for evening use, and side screens or roll-down blinds can close off one or more sides against low sun, wind or rain. Wall-mounted pergolas can be joined to the building so the covered area flows straight out from a living room or restaurant.

Pergola Roof Types Compared

The roof decides how a pergola behaves in sun and rain. The table compares the four common options.

Roof Type Shade Rain Protection Adjustable Best For
Fixed Slats Partial, filtered No No Gardens, walkways and decorative seating areas
Motorised Louvers Partial to full Yes, when closed Yes, by remote or switch Outdoor dining, lounges and premium terraces
Retractable Fabric Full when closed Light rain, depending on the fabric Yes, by hand or motor Restaurant terraces and patios
Polycarbonate Filtered daylight Yes No Terraces that need cover all year

If the area needs full rain cover more than adjustable shade, compare these options with our polycarbonate roofing.

Freestanding vs Wall-Mounted Pergolas

A freestanding pergola stands on four or more posts of its own, so it can be placed anywhere: in the middle of a lawn, at the far end of a terrace or beside a pool. It needs firm anchoring at every post, either into a concrete base in the ground or onto the roof slab.

A wall-mounted pergola has posts on the outer side only, and its other side is fixed to the building with a ledger beam. It uses fewer posts, leaves more floor space clear and extends the room behind it outdoors, but it needs a sound wall to fix to and a proper seal where the frame meets the building.

Pergola Materials and Options

The options below cover most residential and hospitality pergolas. The final specification depends on the span, the roof type and the site.

Component Options
Frame Powder-coated aluminium, or powder-coated mild steel for larger spans
Finish Solid colours such as black, grey and white, or wood-grain finish
Roof Fixed aluminium slats, motorised louvers, retractable fabric or polycarbonate sheets
Operation Fixed, manual or motorised with remote control
Fixing Base plates anchored to concrete or roof slab, and wall brackets for attached pergolas
Add-ons LED lighting, side screens or roll-down blinds, and built-in gutters

Benefits of Pergolas and Outdoor Living Solutions

A pergola is usually added to get more use out of a space that is already there but is too hot or too exposed for most of the day.

  • An Extra Outdoor Room: A terrace, lawn or deck becomes a defined place to sit, eat or entertain, without the cost of building a closed room.
  • Shade That Lets Air Through: The open sides keep a breeze moving, so the space stays cooler than under a closed roof.
  • Control Over Sun and Rain: Louvered and retractable roofs can be opened on a pleasant evening and closed at midday or in a shower.
  • Low Upkeep: Powder-coated aluminium needs only an occasional wash, with no painting, polishing or termite treatment.
  • Usable After Dark: Lighting built into the frame lets the space be used in the evening, which is when many people use their terraces most.
  • A Finished Look for the Property: A well-proportioned pergola gives a garden, rooftop or pool deck a clear focal point and makes it look complete.

Applications of Pergolas and Outdoor Living Systems

Homeowners mostly build pergolas on rooftop terraces and over patios that open from the living or dining room. In villas and farmhouses, they are put up on lawns as garden seating, beside pools and over outdoor kitchens and barbecue areas.

Restaurants, cafes and rooftop bars use retractable and louvered pergolas to keep outdoor tables open through more of the year. Resorts and hotels place them at poolside decks, spa areas, lawns used for small functions and sit-outs outside rooms, and offices and clubhouses use them to create shaded break-out areas outdoors.

Installing a Pergola on a Rooftop Terrace

Rooftop terraces are one of the most common places for a pergola in Indian cities, and they need more planning than a garden. The roof slab has to carry the pergola, so the post positions are chosen over beams or columns where possible, and the base plates are fixed in a way that does not damage the waterproofing.

Wind is stronger at roof level, especially on higher floors, so the frame and its anchors are designed for it. In apartments, the housing society may also need to approve the structure before work begins.

Pergola Price in India: What Affects the Cost

The roof system has the biggest effect on price. A pergola with fixed slats costs the least, a retractable fabric roof costs more, and a motorised louvered roof is usually the most expensive because of its moving louvers, motor and built-in drainage.

Size, frame material and finish come next, followed by add-ons such as lighting, side screens and remote control. Installation height, rooftop access, the type of base or slab, and the site location also affect the final amount.

For a quote, share the length and width of the area, whether it is on the ground or on a roof, the roof type you prefer and a few photos of the space.

From Site Visit to Installed Pergola

Most of the work happens before installation day, in getting the size, post positions and fixing details right.

  • Step 1 – Site visit: We measure the space, check the floor or roof slab, look at the sun direction and views, and discuss how the area will be used.
  • Step 2 – Design and drawings: We prepare a layout and 3D view showing the size, height, post positions, roof type and finish for your approval.
  • Step 3 – Fabrication: Frame members, slats or louvers are cut, machined and powder-coated, and fabric roofs and blinds are made to size.
  • Step 4 – Installation: Posts are anchored, the frame is assembled and levelled, and the roof, gutters, lighting and motors are fitted.
  • Step 5 – Testing and handover: Moving roofs and blinds are tested, and we explain how to operate and clean the pergola.

Pergola Design and Installation Solutions

ShadeCo India designs, fabricates and installs pergolas for homes, villas, restaurants, resorts and commercial outdoor spaces. One team handles the drawings, frame fabrication and site work, so the pergola that is installed matches the design you approved.

Why Homeowners, Restaurants and Resorts Choose ShadeCo India

A pergola is a small structure, but it still carries wind loads and, on a rooftop, sits on a slab that was not built with it in mind. Since 2010 we have designed steel and fabric structures for open sites across India, and we apply the same care to pergolas: checking what the posts will stand on, anchoring them properly and sizing the frame for the wind.

Because we also make awnings, shade sails and tensile structures, we can suggest a different kind of shade where a pergola is not the best fit, or combine them on the same project.

For related outdoor shade options, you can also explore our awnings and canopies, shade sails, polycarbonate roofing, and window awnings.

Outdoor Living and Shade Project References

Our outdoor shade portfolio includes residential tensile canopies at Sainik Farm in Delhi and the cafe canopy at Panjim Convention Centre in Goa. These projects cover domestic and hospitality spaces where seating, circulation and the relationship to the adjoining building affect the layout.

Details are available on our projects page. For a pergola, share the terrace or garden dimensions, the intended seating arrangement and whether rain cover is required. The frame, roof treatment and fixing positions can then be planned around the property.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions - Pergolas and Outdoor Living

A pergola is an open outdoor structure of posts and overhead beams that shades a garden, terrace, patio or poolside while leaving the sides open. Its roof can be fixed slats, adjustable louvers, a retractable fabric cover or polycarbonate sheets, depending on how much sun and rain protection is needed.

Pergola cost depends mainly on the roof type, with fixed slats costing the least and motorised louvered roofs the most. Size, frame material, finish, lighting and side screens, installation height and site location also affect the price. Share the size of your space and the roof you prefer with ShadeCo India for a quotation.

A pergola with fixed slats gives shade but does not keep out rain. A motorised louvered pergola is rain-proof when the louvers are closed, and water drains through gutters in the frame. Polycarbonate roofs keep out rain all the time, while retractable fabric roofs handle light rain depending on the fabric used.

A louvered pergola has aluminium blades that tilt to adjust shade and close fully against rain. A retractable fabric pergola has a fabric roof that slides back to open the sky and pulls closed for shade. Louvered roofs give finer control and better rain protection, while fabric roofs cost less and open up the space completely.

Yes. A rooftop pergola is fixed to the roof slab with base plates, and its posts are placed over beams or columns where possible. The fixing is done without damaging the waterproofing, and the frame is designed for the stronger wind at roof level. In apartments, check whether the housing society needs to approve it.

Aluminium is better suited to most Indian conditions because it does not rot, warp, rust or attract termites, and its powder-coated finish needs no painting. Wood looks warm but needs regular polishing and treatment. A wood-grain finish on aluminium gives a similar look without the upkeep.

A pergola has an open or partly open roof of beams, slats or louvers and is often attached to a building. A gazebo is a freestanding structure with a solid, usually pitched roof and is often round or octagonal. A pergola is typically used to extend a home or terrace outdoors, while a gazebo stands on its own in a garden.

Wash the frame and louvers with mild soap and water a few times a year, keep the gutters and louver channels free of leaves and dust, and have the motors and fixings checked from time to time. Fabric roofs and blinds should be kept dry before being retracted for long periods.
