A window sun shade, also known as a window shade canopy, sunshade for windows, fabric window chajja or external window shade, is a small cover fixed above a window on the outside of a building to stop direct sun and rain from reaching the glass. A coated fabric on a light steel frame projects out from the wall at an angle or in a dome shape, shading the window during the hottest hours while still letting daylight in from below. Homes, apartments, offices, schools, hospitals, hotels and shops use them on sun-facing walls.

ShadeCo India Private Limited is a window sun shade manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install fixed sloped window shades, dome and quarter-round shades, continuous shades along a row of windows, balcony sun shades, polycarbonate window covers and fold-back fabric shades, made to the size of each opening on new and existing buildings.

The most useful window shade is the one that blocks the sun at the right time of day. We start by checking which way each window faces, because west and south-facing glass usually takes the most heat in India, and then set the projection and angle so the shade covers the glass when the sun is strongest. We also look at the wall the shade will be fixed to, the window frame and any sill or chajja already there, and how rainwater from the shade will drain.

Why Windows Need a Sun Shade

Glass lets in heat as well as light. A west-facing bedroom or office window in an Indian summer can make the room noticeably hotter through the afternoon, curtains end up closed all day, and furniture and floors near the window fade. In the monsoon, rain lashes against unprotected windows, seeps through older frames and stains the wall below. Many modern buildings have no chajja at all, so their windows face the full weather.

An external sun shade deals with the problem before it reaches the glass. Blocking direct sun outside the window can help reduce heat build-up inside and glare on screens and desks, while the room still gets daylight from below the shade. The same cover keeps rain off the window and frame, so windows can often stay open in light showers. On a facade, a neat row of matching shades also gives the building a finished, ordered look.

Types of Window Sun Shade

Window shades differ in shape, how many windows they cover and whether they are fixed or can be folded back.

Fixed Sloped Window Shade

A straight, angled fabric shade on a fixed frame, the modern equivalent of a chajja. It suits bedrooms, kitchens, offices and classrooms, and sheds rain cleanly off its front edge.

Dome and Quarter-Round Shade

Curved ribs give the shade a rounded profile. Domes fit arched and tall windows, and their shape adds character to heritage-style buildings, hotels and shopfronts.

Continuous Window Shade Run

Where several windows sit in a line, a series of matching shades or one long shade covers the whole run. It is common on school blocks, hospital wards, office floors and ground-floor shop rows.

Balcony Sun Shade

A deeper shade fixed above an apartment balcony keeps sun and rain off the balcony and the glass door behind it, turning the space into a usable sit-out.

Polycarbonate Window Cover

A clear or tinted polycarbonate sheet on a steel frame makes a stiff, rain-tight cover through which more light reaches the window. See our polycarbonate roofing.

Fold-Back Window Shade

A fabric shade on a folding frame can be pulled out in the sun and folded back against the wall when not needed. For extendable shopfront and balcony options, see our window awnings.

Custom Window Sun Shade Design: Orientation, Projection and Fixing

Orientation and projection go together. A south-facing window needs a moderate projection because the sun is high at midday, while a west-facing window sees low afternoon sun and benefits from a deeper shade or side cheeks. The shade is usually made a little wider than the window so slanting sun does not slip past the sides, and its angle is set to keep rain off the glass without blocking the view from inside.

Fixing depends on the wall. Brackets go into solid brick, concrete or the lintel above the window, not into thin cladding or plaster alone, and every fixing is sealed so water does not enter the wall. The front edge is finished with a valance or rolled edge so rain drips clear of the window and sill. Fabric colour and the frame finish are matched to the facade, and on apartment buildings we keep the design consistent across floors.

PVC vs PVDF Fabric for Window Sun Shades

Window shades are fixed to the outside of the building and seen every day, so the fabric must be waterproof and keep its colour. Both PVC and PVDF meet the first need; PVDF does better on the second.

Feature PVC-Coated Polyester PVDF-Coated Polyester

Benefits of Window Sun Shades

A sun shade is one of the simplest ways to make a sun-facing room more comfortable.

  • Less Heat Through the Glass: Stopping sun outside the window can help keep the room cooler in the afternoon.
  • Less Glare Indoors: Screens, desks and whiteboards near the window are easier to see.
  • Daylight Without Direct Sun: Light still enters below the shade, so curtains can stay open.
  • Rain Off the Window: Frames, sills and walls stay drier, and windows can be opened in light rain.
  • Furnishings Protected: Less direct sun means less fading of curtains, floors and furniture.
  • A Tidier Facade: Matching shades in a chosen colour give the building a consistent look.

Applications of Window Sun Shades

Homeowners fit sun shades over bedroom, living room and kitchen windows on west and south walls, and apartment residents add them over balconies and utility windows. Bungalows and heritage-style houses often use dome shades for their look as well as their shade.

Schools and colleges shade classroom windows to cut glare on boards and keep rooms more comfortable, and hospitals use continuous shades along ward windows. Offices fit them on sun-facing floors, hotels over guest-room windows and balconies, and shops and cafes over display windows, where the fabric colour can match the brand.

Window Sun Shade Price in India: What Affects the Cost

The price of window sun shades depends mainly on the size of each shade and the number of windows. Ordering matching shades for a whole facade or several floors usually costs less per piece than a single custom shade.

The shape (sloped, dome or quarter-round), PVC, PVDF or polycarbonate covering, projection, frame finish, fixed or fold-back design, wall type, the height at which installation is needed and the location all affect the quotation. Work on upper floors may need scaffolding or a lift, which is included where required.

For a quotation, send the width and height of each window, the number of windows, which direction they face, the floor level, a photograph of the wall and the location.

How We Design and Install a Window Sun Shade

Window shades are usually fitted on occupied homes and buildings, so we plan access and keep the work quick and tidy around each window.

  • Step 1 – Window survey: We measure each opening, note its orientation and floor level, and check the wall and lintel for fixing.
  • Step 2 – Style and colour: We recommend the shade shape, projection and covering, and share a drawing with colour samples.
  • Step 3 – Frame and bracket design: Frames and wall fixings are sized for the shade and for wind at the building height under IS 875.
  • Step 4 – Making the shades: Steel frames are bent, welded and coated, and the fabric is cut, edged and fitted to each frame in our workshop.
  • Step 5 – Fitting on site: Brackets are anchored and sealed, the shades are mounted and levelled, and drip edges are checked.
  • Step 6 – Final check: We confirm alignment across the facade, test for rain run-off and explain simple cleaning.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions - Window Sun Shade

A window sun shade is an external cover fixed above a window to stop direct sun and rain from reaching the glass. It is usually a coated fabric or polycarbonate sheet on a light steel frame, projecting from the wall at an angle or in a dome shape, and works like a modern chajja.

The price depends on the size and number of shades, the shape, PVC, PVDF or polycarbonate covering, projection, frame finish, wall type, floor level and location. Share the window sizes, quantity, direction and a wall photo with ShadeCo India for a quotation.

They can help. By stopping direct sun outside the window, before it reaches the glass, an external shade can reduce heat build-up and glare in the room, especially on west and south-facing windows. The effect depends on the window size, orientation and how well the shade covers the glass.

In most parts of India, west-facing windows get the strongest afternoon sun and benefit most, followed by south-facing windows. East windows get morning sun, and north windows usually need shade mainly for rain. ShadeCo India sets the projection for each window based on its direction.

Yes. Shades on upper floors are fixed into solid wall or lintel and designed for the higher wind at that height as per IS 875 (Part 3). Our team arranges safe access, and the design can be kept the same across all floors if the society wants a uniform look.

Coated fabric gives softer shade, comes in many colours and stripes, and can be shaped into domes. Polycarbonate is rigid and lets more light reach the window, which suits rooms that need brightness. Both keep rain off; the choice depends on the look and how much light you want.

The steel frame has an expected service life of 25–30 years with basic care. PVDF fabric has a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms, and PVC fabric life depends on its grade. Fabric can be replaced on the same frame when needed.

Delivery is typically 3–6 weeks, depending on the number of shades and how customised they are. Fitting on site is quick for each window, and the work is planned to cause little disturbance to people inside.
