Prefabricated steel buildings, also called pre-engineered buildings (PEB), PEB structures or prefab steel sheds, are steel buildings whose frames, purlins and cladding are designed for one particular project, produced in a factory and then bolted together on site. The main frames use tapered steel sections that are deeper only where loads are higher, so a PEB needs less steel than a conventional steel shed and is completed much faster than an RCC building. Factories, warehouses, workshops and sports halls are typical uses.

ShadeCo India Private Limited is a prefabricated steel buildings manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install prefabricated industrial buildings, warehouse sheds, sports hall structures, pre-engineered aircraft hangars, portable cabins for site offices and custom PEB buildings for logistics centres, workshops and cold stores, each designed for its site and load conditions and delivered with roof and wall cladding.

PEB buildings designed to non-standard sizes or uses, such as cold stores, showrooms, community halls, multi-span sheds or buildings with mezzanine floors. Each design starts from the site plan, the loads and how the space will be used.

PEB Building Sizes and Layout Options

Every PEB that ShadeCo India supplies is designed around four main dimensions: the width, the length, the eave height and the bay spacing. Width can be a single clear span with no columns inside, or several spans with interior columns where a very wide building would otherwise need very deep frames. Length is built up in bays, and the end wall can be designed so the building is easy to extend later.

Inside, the building can carry an EOT crane on runway beams, a mezzanine floor for offices or storage, and a canopy over loading docks. Roof and walls can be single-skin metal sheets or insulated sandwich panels, with translucent sheets for daylight and ridge or turbo ventilators for air movement.

Components of a Pre-Engineered Steel Building

A PEB is made of a few standard groups of parts. The table below lists them and the options usually available. The exact specification is set by the structural design for each building.

Component Description and Options
Primary Frame Tapered built-up steel columns and rafters, bolted at site
Secondary Members Cold-formed Z and C section purlins (roof) and girts (walls)
Bracing Rod, cable or angle bracing for wind and seismic stability
Roof & Wall Cladding Colour-coated or Galvalume metal sheets, or insulated sandwich panels
Daylight & Ventilation Translucent roof sheets, ridge ventilators and turbo ventilators
Rainwater Eave gutters, valley gutters and downpipes
Optional Structures Crane runway beams, mezzanine floors, canopies and fascias
Doors & Openings Rolling shutters, sliding doors, personnel doors and windows
Design Standards IS 800 for steel design, IS 875 for dead, live and wind loads, IS 1893 for seismic loads

PEB vs Conventional Steel and RCC Buildings

For industrial and warehouse buildings, the choice is usually between a PEB, a conventional steel structure made from standard hot-rolled sections, and an RCC building. The table compares them on the points owners ask about most.

Feature PEB Conventional Steel RCC
Construction Time Fastest Medium Slowest
Steel Used Less, tapered to the loads More, uniform sections Reinforcement only
Building Weight Light Medium Heavy
Foundations Smaller Medium Large
Column-Free Span Wide Moderate Limited
Future Expansion Easy, add bays Possible with more site work Difficult

If you need a building that can be moved or is needed only for a limited period, compare it with our aluminium hangar tents.

Benefits of Prefabricated Steel Buildings

Owners choose PEB mainly because it gets a large, usable building ready sooner and at a predictable cost.

  • Shorter Build Time: Parts are fabricated while the foundations are being cast, so erection starts as soon as the site is ready.
  • Lower Steel Weight: Tapered frames put steel only where the loads need it, which reduces the steel tonnage and the foundation size.
  • Wide Clear Spans: Large floor areas without interior columns suit racking, machinery and vehicle movement.
  • Factory Quality: Members are cut, welded and painted under controlled conditions, so on-site work is mostly bolting.
  • Easy to Expand: More bays can be added at the end walls when the business grows.
  • Designed for Indian Conditions: Frames and bracing are designed for the site's wind and seismic zone under Indian standards.

Applications of Prefabricated Steel Buildings

Manufacturing is one of the most common uses. Factories and assembly units use PEB for production halls, often with EOT cranes and mezzanine offices, and engineering workshops use them for fabrication and repair bays. Warehouses and logistics centres choose PEB for the wide column-free floor, high eaves for racking and the ease of adding loading docks along the sides.

Insulated PEB buildings are used for cold storage and food processing. Outside industry, the same system is used for sports halls, showrooms, community halls, aircraft hangars and utility buildings, and portable cabins serve as site offices, security cabins and staff rooms on construction and industrial sites.

Prefabricated Steel Building Price in India: Factors That Affect Cost

PEB buildings are usually priced on the built-up area, but the real driver is the steel tonnage, and that depends on the building's span, eave height and bay spacing as well as the wind and seismic zone of the site. A crane, a mezzanine or heavy roof loads such as solar panels all increase the frame size.

Cladding is the next big item: insulated sandwich panels cost more than single-skin sheets, and the sheet thickness and coating matter too. Doors, ventilators, skylights, gutters and canopies add to the total, along with foundations, transport and erection at the site.

For a quote, share the building's length, width and height, its use, any crane or mezzanine requirement, the type of cladding, and the site location.

How a PEB Project Is Designed and Built

A PEB project moves on two tracks at once: steel is fabricated in the factory while foundations are prepared on site, which is where most of the time saving comes from.

  • Step 1 – Requirement and layout: We confirm the building size, use, crane and mezzanine needs, doors and cladding, and prepare a general arrangement drawing.
  • Step 2 – Structural design: The frames, purlins and bracing are designed to IS 800, with loads as per IS 875 and seismic forces as per IS 1893, and the anchor bolt layout is issued for the foundations.
  • Step 3 – Shop drawings and fabrication: Detailed drawings are prepared for every member, and the steel is cut, welded, drilled and painted in the factory.
  • Step 4 – Foundations: Foundations are cast with anchor bolts set to the approved layout while fabrication is under way.
  • Step 5 – Erection: Main frames are lifted and bolted, followed by purlins, girts and bracing, then the roof and wall cladding.
  • Step 6 – Finishing and handover: Gutters, doors, ventilators and trims are fitted, the building is checked against the drawings, and it is handed over with maintenance guidance.

Prefabricated Steel Building Design and Installation Solutions

ShadeCo India works as a manufacturer, supplier and project execution partner for pre-engineered buildings. We handle design, fabrication, supply and erection, from a single workshop shed to large warehouses and factory buildings with cranes and mezzanines.

Why Choose ShadeCo India for Prefabricated Steel Buildings?

ShadeCo India Private Limited has been delivering steel and fabric structures since 2010 and is ISO 9001:2015 certified. Design, fabrication and erection stay with one team, so the building that arrives on site matches the drawings and the anchor bolts the foundation contractor was given.

Because we also build tensile structures, polycarbonate roofing and aluminium hangar tents, we can add canopies, walkways or temporary storage to the same project, or suggest a lighter option where a full PEB is not needed.

For related industrial and large-span structure options, you can also explore our aluminium hangar tents, tensile structures, polycarbonate roofing, and ETFE membrane structures.

Industrial-Site References and PEB Planning

A prefabricated steel building proposal starts with the activity inside: storage, manufacturing, servicing or another defined use. Clear height, door positions and equipment loads should be recorded alongside the site dimensions so the building layout supports the operation.

Our projects page includes fabric parking canopies at Saurav Chemicals in Panchkula and Derabassi as examples of work at industrial premises. A PEB requires a separate structural and enclosure specification, with foundations, cladding and erection access coordinated for the proposed building.

Prefabricated Steel Buildings Across India

PEB buildings are shipped as numbered steel members and cladding bundles on trucks, so they can be erected on any site in India. ShadeCo India takes up PEB projects in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala, as well as in eastern and north-eastern states.

PEB buildings are in demand wherever industry and warehousing are growing, for example in industrial estates and logistics parks in and around Bawal, Neemrana, Manesar, Sonipat, Greater Noida, Sri City, Sanand, Halol, Chakan, Bhiwandi, Hosur and Oragadam. The same building can just as well go up on an agricultural plot, a school campus or a new industrial area in a district town.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions - Prefabricated Steel Buildings

A prefabricated steel building, or pre-engineered building (PEB), is a steel structure whose frames, purlins and cladding are designed for one specific building, made in a factory and bolted together on site. It is used for factories, warehouses, workshops, cold stores, sports halls and hangars.

PEB cost in India is usually quoted on the built-up area, but it depends mainly on the steel tonnage, which is set by the span, eave height, bay spacing, crane or mezzanine loads and the site's wind and seismic zone. Cladding type, doors, accessories, foundations and location also affect the price. Share your building size and use with ShadeCo India for an accurate quotation.

Prefabricated steel buildings are used for factories, assembly units, workshops, warehouses, logistics centres, cold storage, food processing units, sports halls, showrooms, community halls, aircraft hangars and utility buildings.

A PEB uses tapered built-up frames sized to the actual loads, along with cold-formed purlins, so it needs less steel and is faster to erect. A conventional steel building uses standard hot-rolled sections of uniform size, which usually means more steel and more work on site.

The terms are often used interchangeably. Prefabricated means the parts are made in a factory before reaching the site. Pre-engineered means each building is designed specifically for its size and loads before fabrication. A PEB is both: engineered for the project and prefabricated in the factory.

PEB construction is much faster than RCC, because steel is fabricated in the factory while the foundations are cast on site. The total time depends on the building size, design approvals and site readiness, and ShadeCo India shares a schedule with every quotation.

Yes. A PEB can be extended in length by adding bays at the end wall, and the end frames can be designed from the start to make future expansion easier.

Yes. PEB buildings are designed to Indian standards, with wind loads as per IS 875 and seismic loads as per IS 1893 for the site's zone. Steel buildings are also light, which reduces earthquake forces compared with heavy RCC structures.
