An entrance canopy, also known as a building entrance canopy, entrance shade canopy, porch canopy or door canopy, provides a roof above a building entrance, its approach steps and the area where people wait. A tensile fabric roof on a steel frame is one option; wall-mounted, cantilever and polycarbonate arrangements are also available. At offices, hotels, hospitals, schools, malls, showrooms and housing societies, the cover is planned around the doorway and the space needed to approach or leave it.
ShadeCo India Private Limited is an entrance canopy manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install tensile entrance canopies, drop-off and porch canopies, cantilever entry shades, wall-mounted door canopies and custom architectural entrance roofing. Projects range from a small cover over a single office door to a wide canopy across the driveway in front of a hotel lobby. The entrance brief should show how far the shelter needs to extend beyond the door itself.
Planning starts with the doorway itself: its width and height, how far the cover must reach, whether vehicles stop underneath and where rainwater will go once it leaves the roof. We also look closely at the facade the canopy will meet, whether glass, brick, cladding or concrete, because that decides if the canopy can hang from the wall or needs columns of its own.

Why Building Entrances Need a Canopy
An uncovered entrance is where bad weather causes the most trouble. Rain falls straight onto the steps outside the door, and wet shoes carry water across the lobby, which makes tiled and stone floors slippery. In summer, people waiting for a cab or a pick-up stand in full sun, and glass doors facing south or west let heat and glare straight into the reception.
A canopy fixes this at the one point every visitor passes. It gives people a dry, shaded place to fold an umbrella or step out of a car, and it keeps rain off ramps used by wheelchairs and patient trolleys. It also marks the main door clearly from the road and the car park, so first-time visitors know where to go in.
Types of Entrance Canopies
The right entrance canopy depends on how deep the cover must be, whether the wall can carry load and whether vehicles need to pass underneath.
Tensile Fabric Entrance Canopy
A PVC or PVDF membrane is stretched over a steel frame into curved, peaked or arched forms. It is light, spans wide doorways without heavy beams and gives offices, hotels and institutions a clean, modern front.
Cantilever Entrance Canopy
The columns stand to one side or behind the canopy, so the space in front of the door has no posts at all. It suits entries where cars, trolleys or crowds need a clear path. Explore our cantilever shade structures.
Wall-Mounted Door Canopy
Brackets or tie rods fix the canopy straight to the building, with nothing at ground level. It is used over single doors, shop fronts, villa entrances and side exits where only a short projection is needed.
Drop-Off and Porch Canopy
A larger canopy on columns covers the driveway in front of the main door, so people can get in and out of vehicles under cover. It is common at hotels, hospitals, schools and corporate offices.
Polycarbonate Entrance Cover
Polycarbonate sheets on a steel frame make a rigid, rain-proof cover that lets daylight through, which helps where the area below the canopy should stay bright. Explore our polycarbonate roofing.
Custom Architectural Entrance Canopy
A custom canopy is drawn for one building, following its facade lines or brand colour, or linking the entrance to a covered path or parking shade. Lighting and signage can be built into the frame. See also our walkway tensile structures.
Custom Entrance Canopy Design: Projection, Clear Height and Drainage
Projection is the first figure to settle when planning an entrance canopy. If the canopy stops short of the steps, people can get wet while opening the door. The cover is therefore usually carried past the last step. For a drop-off canopy, it extends past the line where car doors open. Clear height is set for the tallest use below the canopy. This may be a person with an open umbrella at a shop door, or an SUV, ambulance or school bus under a porch canopy.
Drainage needs the most care at an entrance. The roof is sloped so water runs to the sides or into gutters and downpipes, keeping it away from the doorway and ramp. At the point where the canopy meets the wall, the joint is flashed and sealed to stop water streaming down the facade. We avoid fixings into glass curtain walls or thin cladding. Column positions are also checked against the entrance layout so they never block doors, ramps or fire exits.
PVC vs PVDF Fabric for Entrance Canopies
An entrance canopy has to keep the doorway dry, so it is made with a coated, waterproof membrane. PVC and PVDF both do this well; the difference is in how they age on the front of the building and what they cost.
| Feature | PVC-Coated Polyester | PVDF-Coated Polyester |
|---|---|---|
| Keeps Rain Off the Doorway | Yes, fully waterproof | Yes, fully waterproof |
| Surface Over Time | Smooth coated surface, needs periodic washing | Dirt-resistant top coat keeps a cleaner look |

Benefits of Entrance Canopies
An entrance canopy is used every day, by visitors at the door and by the team that looks after the building.
- Dry Entry in the Monsoon: Visitors can close umbrellas under cover, and less rainwater is carried into the lobby.
- Safer Steps and Ramps: Keeping rain off steps and ramps helps reduce wet, slippery surfaces at the door.
- Shade for Pick-Ups: People waiting for a cab, a school bus or a patient pick-up can stand out of the sun.
- Easy-to-Find Main Door: A canopy makes the main entrance stand out from the road and the car park.
- Less Glare at the Door: Shading glass doors and the lobby front can help cut glare and heat entering the reception.
- Suits the Facade: Shape, fabric colour and frame finish are chosen to match the building.
- Simple Upkeep: The fabric is rinsed with water and mild soap, and the frame and fixings need only periodic checks.
Applications of Entrance Canopies
Corporate offices, IT parks and banks use entrance canopies over main lobbies and staff entries, while hotels, resorts and banquet halls use larger drop-off canopies where guests arrive by car. Hospitals and clinics cover emergency entries, OPD doors and ambulance bays so patients can be moved without getting wet, and schools and colleges cover gates and building doors where students gather at the start and end of the day.
Malls, showrooms and retail stores add canopies over shop fronts and entry doors, often with the brand name or lighting fixed to the frame. Apartment complexes and residential societies cover tower lobbies and main gates, villas and bungalows use compact door canopies, and government offices, community halls and other public buildings use them over entries with heavy footfall.
Entrance Canopy Price in India: What Affects the Cost
The cost of an entrance canopy depends first on its size, meaning the width of the entrance and how far the canopy projects from the building. A short wall-mounted cover over one door needs far less steel and fabric than a column-supported drop-off canopy that spans a driveway.
The roofing material (PVC, PVDF or polycarbonate), support method, clear height, steel finish, gutters and downpipes, lighting or signage, foundation work, access on site and the project location all change the final figure. Fixing to an existing facade may also need extra brackets or a separate frame if the wall cannot take the load.
For a quotation, send us the entrance width, the depth of cover you need, the clear height, photographs of the facade and doorway, and the site location. Drawings help if you have them.
How We Design and Install an Entrance Canopy
Most entrances stay in use while the work goes on, so installation is planned in stages with a safe path kept open for people coming in and going out.
- Step 1 – Site visit: We measure the doorway, steps, ramps and driveway, and check the facade material and where fixings or columns can go.
- Step 2 – Concept and drawings: We propose the canopy type, shape, projection, roofing material and colour, and share drawings for approval.
- Step 3 – Engineering: The frame, wall connections and foundations are designed for the span and the site wind load as per IS 875 (Part 3), and the drainage route is fixed.
- Step 4 – Fabrication: Steel sections are cut, welded and finished in our workshop, and membrane panels are cut and joined to the approved pattern.
- Step 5 – Installation: The work zone is barricaded, wall brackets or foundations are set, the frame is erected, and the fabric is fitted and tensioned along with gutters and any lighting.
- Step 6 – Handover: We check alignment, fixings, finish and that water runs away from the door, then share care guidance for the canopy.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - Entrance Canopy
An entrance canopy is a roof fixed above a building's main door to protect the doorway, steps and waiting area from rain and sun. It can be a tensile fabric canopy on a steel frame, a wall-mounted door canopy, a cantilever canopy or a polycarbonate cover, depending on the building and the space in front of the entry.
Each entrance canopy is priced for its own site. The cost depends on the entrance width, projection, clear height, roofing material (PVC, PVDF or polycarbonate), wall-mounted or column support, steel finish, drainage, lighting and the site location. Share your entrance size, photos and location with ShadeCo India for a quotation.
Both keep out rain. Tensile PVC or PVDF fabric suits curved, peaked or wide-span designs and gives soft, even shade. Polycarbonate gives a rigid flat or arched cover that lets more daylight through. The choice depends on the look you want, the span and how bright the area under the canopy should be.
Yes, for shorter projections. A wall-mounted canopy is held by brackets or tie rods fixed into the building, so no posts are needed at ground level. The wall must be able to carry the load, so ShadeCo India checks the facade first. For deeper canopies, a cantilever or column-supported design is used.
The steel structure has an expected service life of 25–30 years with proper maintenance. PVDF fabric carries a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms, while the life of PVC fabric varies with the grade selected for the project.
Yes, when it is made with waterproof PVC or PVDF fabric or polycarbonate and the projection covers the steps. The roof is sloped so water runs to the sides or into gutters, away from the door, and the wall joint is sealed so water does not run down the facade.
Delivery typically takes 3–6 weeks, depending on the canopy size and level of customization. This covers design approval, fabrication and installation. Site work is planned in stages so the entrance can stay open while the canopy goes up.
ShadeCo India designs the frame, wall fixings and foundations for the wind load at the site as per IS 875 (Part 3). The fabric is tensioned so it does not flap, and checking the tension, bolts and fixings at regular intervals, especially before the monsoon, keeps the canopy in good condition.
