Cantilever shade structures, also known as cantilever shades, cantilever canopies, front-open shade structures or single-side supported shades, have columns on one side and steel arms that extend over the covered area. The opposite edge stays open without a front row of posts, leaving space for vehicles to enter or people to pass beneath the roof. This arrangement can suit car parking, building entrances, drop-off points, walkways, seating and loading areas. The required projection and the activity below the canopy help determine where the support line should sit.
ShadeCo India Private Limited is a cantilever shade structure manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install single-side cantilever shades, back-to-back double cantilevers, curved and arched cantilever canopies, wall-mounted cantilever covers, mast-and-cable cantilevers and cantilever entrance canopies. Fabric options include HDPE shade fabric or PVC and PVDF-coated membrane. The intended use also defines how much clear space is needed along the open edge.
In a cantilever, the whole canopy is balanced on one line of columns, so the most important numbers are the projection, the height and the ground conditions where the columns stand. We check how far the shade has to reach, the clear height needed at the open end for cars, vans or people, and whether the columns can sit at the back of a parking row, against a wall or along a boundary. The fabric is then chosen by whether the space needs shade only or full rain cover.

Why Choose a Cantilever Shade Structure
Ordinary four-post shades put columns at every corner, and in many places those front posts are exactly where they cause problems. Drivers clip them while parking, they narrow driveways and walkways, they block the view of a shopfront or entrance, and in a row of parking bays they take up space that could otherwise fit more cars. Every extra post also means another foundation to dig in an area that may already be paved.
A cantilever shade moves all the supports to one side. The open edge faces the driveway, the walkway or the view, so vehicles and people move in and out with nothing in the way. The canopy can be shaped as a curve, a straight slope or a tensioned membrane, and when the columns stand at the back of a parking row or against a wall, they hardly take up any usable ground at all.
Types of Cantilever Shade Structures
Cantilever shades vary mainly in how the arms are supported and how many rows they cover.
Single-Side Cantilever
One row of columns stands at the back, and the arms reach forward over one row of parking bays or a walkway. It suits boundary walls, roadside parking and narrow sites where only one side is free for supports.
Back-to-Back Double Cantilever
A central row of columns carries arms on both sides, covering two rows of parking from one line of supports. Both outer edges stay open to the driving aisles. See our car parking tensile structures.
Curved and Arched Cantilever
The arm is curved so the canopy sweeps over the space, like the car porch and seating canopies in our photos. It gives a softer look for homes, cafes, campuses and commercial frontages.
Wall-Mounted Cantilever
Brackets fixed to a building or boundary wall carry the canopy, so no columns stand on the ground. It is used over windows, doors, service yards and narrow side passages where the wall is strong enough to take the load.
Mast-and-Cable Cantilever
A tall mast with tie cables holds the canopy up from above, allowing a longer, lighter projection. This form gives a striking look over plazas, entrances and seating areas.
Cantilever Entrance Canopy
A cantilever over a doorway or drop-off point keeps the approach free of posts, so cars can pull up and people can step straight inside. See our entrance canopy range.
Custom Cantilever Design: Projection, Foundations and Drainage
A cantilever behaves like a lever. The longer the projection, the larger the bending force at the base of each column, so projection, column size and foundation size are designed together. Wind matters even more than weight: an open-fronted canopy is lifted from below in strong wind, so the arms, connections and footings must hold it down as well as up. Where foundations are restricted, tie cables or back-stays can share the load.
Clear height at the open end is set for the tallest vehicle or user, and the tip is designed so it does not dip noticeably under load. With HDPE shade fabric, rain simply passes through and no gutters are needed. With PVC or PVDF, the canopy usually slopes back towards the columns, where a gutter collects the water and sends it down a pipe beside the column, keeping the open front dry for people getting in and out of vehicles.
HDPE vs PVC vs PVDF Fabric for Cantilever Shades
The fabric changes both the use of the shade and the load on the cantilever. This table compares the three options.
| Feature | HDPE Shade Fabric | PVC-Coated Polyester | PVDF-Coated Polyester |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain Cover | No, rain passes through | Yes, waterproof | Yes, waterproof |
| Wind on the Canopy | Porous knit lets some wind through | Solid surface, higher wind uplift | Solid surface, higher wind uplift |
| Gutter at the Columns | Not needed | Needed | Needed |
| Cost | Lowest | Medium | Higher |
| Best For | Car and two-wheeler parking needing sun shade | Entrances, drop-offs and walkways that must stay dry | Feature cantilevers at offices, hotels and malls where appearance lasts |

Benefits of Cantilever Shade Structures
The value of a cantilever shade lies in the space it leaves free.
- Posts Out of the Way: No front columns for drivers to hit or pedestrians to walk around.
- More Usable Bays: Columns at the back of a row do not take up parking width.
- Open Views: Shopfronts, entrances and landscapes stay visible from the open side.
- Fewer Foundations: One line of supports means less digging in paved areas.
- Choice of Fabric: Breathable HDPE for cool parking shade, coated fabric for dry entrances.
- Clean Appearance: Curved arms and tensioned fabric look neater than sheet-roofed sheds.
Applications of Cantilever Shade Structures
Offices, IT parks, malls, hospitals and housing societies use cantilever shades over car and two-wheeler parking, with columns along boundary walls or between rows. Homes and villas use curved cantilevers as car porches, and schools use them over bus bays, pickup points and waiting areas for parents.
Hotels, offices and public buildings put cantilever canopies over entrances and drop-off zones, while cafes, resorts and campuses use them over seating and terraces. Factories and warehouses cover loading bays and service yards where trucks need clear access, and parks and sports grounds use cantilevers over spectator seating along the edge of a field.
Cantilever Shade Structure Price in India: What Affects the Cost
Projection is the biggest factor in a cantilever's cost. A short reach over one row of two-wheelers needs light arms and small footings, while a deep projection over cars or buses needs heavier steel and much larger foundations, even for the same covered area.
The fabric affects the price: HDPE costs least, followed by PVC, then PVDF. The total length of the run, single or back-to-back layout and clear height also change the cost. We account for the steel finish, gutters for coated fabric, soil and paving at the column positions, and where the project is located.
To get a quotation, share the length and depth to be covered, what will park or pass underneath, where the columns can stand, whether you need rain cover, site photos and the address.
How We Design and Install a Cantilever Shade Structure
Parking areas and entrances usually stay in use, so we install in sections and keep traffic and pedestrian routes open around the work.
- Step 1 – Site and ground check: We measure bays, aisles and walkways, note vehicle types, and check where columns can go and what lies underground.
- Step 2 – Layout and fabric: We propose the cantilever type, projection, height and fabric, and send you a layout drawing to sign off.
- Step 3 – Cantilever engineering: Our engineers size the arms, columns, joints and footings for the chosen projection and for uplift on the open front under IS 875.
- Step 4 – Fabrication: Our workshop makes and coats the columns and arms, and fabric panels are cut and finished to size.
- Step 5 – Installation: Footings with anchor bolts are cast, columns and arms are erected, and the fabric is stretched onto the arms one bay at a time.
- Step 6 – Final inspection: Our team confirms alignment, clear height, tip level and gutters, then explain routine checks for bolts and fabric.
Cantilever Shade Structure Design and Installation Solutions

Why Work with ShadeCo India
For more than 15 years, since its founding in 2010, ShadeCo India has designed and installed shade structures under an ISO 9001:2015 certified system. Every engineer, fabricator and installer on our projects is on our own staff, which matters on cantilevers, where the footing, the arm and the connection all have to be right together.
We have supplied organisations such as Delhi Public School, Food Corporation of India, L&T, TATA, Adani, Al-Karim University, Indian Oil, Omaxe, VIVO, Lakhani, Indian Railways, Reliance and several other organizations across India.
On every cantilever we focus on the parts that decide safety and use: footing size, column plumb, a level tip and an open front with nothing in the way. All cantilevers are checked against their drawings at completion, with most projects delivered in 3–6 weeks depending on run length and customization.
Other shade options include our fabric shade structures, inverted umbrellas, walkway tensile structures and shade sails.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - Cantilever Shade Structures
A cantilever shade structure is a fabric shade supported by columns on one side only, with steel arms reaching out over the covered area. The open end has no posts, so vehicles and people can move in and out freely. It is widely used for parking, entrances, drop-off points and walkways.
The cost depends mostly on the projection and length of the shade, followed by the fabric (HDPE, PVC or PVDF), single or back-to-back layout, clear height, steel finish, gutters, ground conditions and location. Send ShadeCo India the area dimensions, vehicle type and site photos for a quotation.
Yes, when it is engineered for the site. Wind tends to lift an open-fronted canopy, so ShadeCo India designs the arms, columns, connections and footings for uplift as per IS 875 (Part 3). Larger projections need deeper footings or tie cables, and bolts should be checked before the monsoon.
HDPE shade fabric is the economical choice for parking that needs sun shade only; it is breathable and needs no gutters. Choose PVC or PVDF-coated polyester if cars and people must stay dry in the rain, as at entrances and drop-off points. Coated fabric needs a gutter at the column line.
Yes. A back-to-back double cantilever uses one central row of columns with arms on both sides, covering two rows of bays while leaving both driving aisles open. It saves space and foundations compared with two separate single-side shades.
Yes, if the wall is strong enough. Wall-mounted cantilevers use brackets fixed to a building or boundary wall, so nothing stands on the ground. ShadeCo India checks the wall before design; if it cannot take the load, a column-supported cantilever is used instead.
The steel structure has an expected service life of 25–30 years with basic maintenance. PVDF fabric carries a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms; the life of HDPE and PVC fabric depends on the grade selected.
Delivery typically takes 3–6 weeks, depending on the length of the run and the level of customization. Installation is done in sections so that parking and access routes stay available while work continues.
