Inverted umbrellas, also known as inverted umbrella tensile structures, funnel canopies, reverse umbrella shades or single-column tensile umbrellas, are fabric canopies supported on one central column, with the membrane rising from the column to a raised outer edge. The funnel shape sends rainwater to the centre, where it drains down through the column, so there is no water dripping off the edges onto people below. They are used singly or in rows at building fronts, plazas, cafes, school grounds, parking areas and walkways.
ShadeCo India Private Limited is an inverted umbrella manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install square and hexagonal inverted umbrellas, linked umbrella rows, parking umbrellas, entrance and walkway umbrellas and branded custom umbrellas, from a single umbrella over a cafe seating group to long runs of umbrellas across a campus or car park.
The key decisions are umbrella size, height and spacing. One column carries the whole canopy, so each umbrella needs a well-designed foundation, and the size of that footing is often the main site constraint on paved plazas and over services. We also plan where the water from each column will go, whether the umbrellas stand alone or are set close together to give continuous cover, and how they line up with doors, parking bays or seating.

Why Choose Inverted Umbrellas
Many outdoor spaces need shade but cannot take a structure with several posts. A plaza with paving and planters, a building front with doors every few metres or a car park with marked bays has very little room for columns, and a conventional canopy drips rain along its whole edge, right where people walk. Ordinary market umbrellas solve neither problem: they are small, blow over and leak.
An inverted umbrella needs only one column, so the ground around it stays free for seating, walking or parking. Because the canopy slopes down to the centre, rain is collected inside the umbrella and carried down the column to a drain, keeping the edges dry. Set in a row, the raised edges of neighbouring umbrellas meet to give near-continuous cover, and the repeated funnel shape becomes a clear architectural feature along a building or a street.
Types of Inverted Umbrellas
Inverted umbrellas vary by plan shape, size and how they are grouped on site.
Single Square Inverted Umbrella
A square canopy on one column, with arms running to the four raised corners. Square umbrellas fit paving grids and seating layouts well and are the most common choice for cafes, gardens and courtyards.
Hexagonal and Octagonal Umbrella
More arms give a rounder canopy with an even outline in all directions. These suit plazas, lawns and roundabouts where the umbrella is seen from all directions.
Linked Umbrella Row
Several umbrellas are placed edge to edge in a line, as along the office front and school entrance in our photos. The row gives long, covered frontage with one column per bay and no dripping edges.
Parking Umbrellas
Larger umbrellas placed between rows of bays shade cars and two-wheelers while leaving the driving aisles clear. Each column takes away its own rainwater. See also our car parking tensile structures.
Entrance and Walkway Umbrellas
Umbrellas positioned at doors, drop-off points and along paths give covered routes without a long line of posts. For continuous covered paths, see our walkway tensile structures.
Custom and Branded Umbrellas
Fabric colour, column colour, size and arm design can be chosen to suit a brand or a landscape scheme, and LED lighting can be built into the column or arms for evening use.
Custom Inverted Umbrella Design: Size, Foundation and Drainage
A single column must hold the entire canopy against wind from any direction, so the foundation is designed with as much care as the umbrella itself. Larger umbrellas need deeper or wider footings, and on plazas, podiums or ground with services below, we check the available space before fixing the umbrella size. Height is set so the low centre of the canopy still clears people, vehicles or delivery vans comfortably.
Drainage is built into the design. The membrane is shaped to a central outlet with a strainer to hold back leaves, and water runs down a pipe inside or alongside the column to the base, where it connects to a storm drain or soak pit. When umbrellas are set in a row, their edges are brought close or overlapped so the gaps between them are as small as the layout allows.
PVC vs PVDF Fabric for Inverted Umbrellas
An inverted umbrella collects rain in the middle, so it must be made from a waterproof coated fabric. Whether to use PVC or PVDF comes down to budget and how important a clean, bright canopy is at the location.
| Feature | PVC-Coated Polyester | PVDF-Coated Polyester |
|---|---|---|
| Rain Collected to Centre | Yes, waterproof | Yes, waterproof |
| Funnel Surface Over Time | Dirt can settle near the centre and should be washed off at intervals | Dirt-resistant top coat lets rain rinse the surface more easily |
| Fabric Warranty | Depends on grade | Up to 10 years |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best For | Parking areas, school grounds and campus walkways | Office fronts, malls, hotels and plazas where the umbrellas are a visible feature |

Benefits of Inverted Umbrellas
Inverted umbrellas give a lot of cover for very little footprint on the ground.
- One Column per Canopy: The ground under and around the umbrella stays open for tables, paths or parking.
- No Dripping Edges: Rain drains through the column, so people at the edge of the canopy stay dry.
- Easy to Repeat: The same unit can be repeated in rows or grids to cover long frontages or large plazas.
- Flexible Layout: Umbrellas can be spaced around doors, bays, trees and planters.
- Recognisable Shape: The upturned funnel form stands out on building fronts and in public spaces.
- Simple Upkeep: Clear the central strainer, wash the fabric now and then, and check the column bolts.
Applications of Inverted Umbrellas
Office buildings, IT parks, hospitals and colleges use rows of inverted umbrellas along their entrances and drop-off zones, and schools place them in front of blocks and over outdoor waiting areas for parents. Malls and retail frontages use them to shade entries and seating, and car parks use larger umbrellas between rows of bays.
Cafes, restaurants and food courts set umbrellas over outdoor tables, and hotels, resorts and clubs use them on terraces, lawns and pool decks. Public plazas, metro and bus station forecourts, parks and promenades use inverted umbrellas to provide shade and rain cover where a full canopy would take up too much space.
Inverted Umbrella Price in India: What Affects the Cost
The cost of an inverted umbrella depends mostly on its size, because a bigger canopy means a heavier column, longer arms and a larger foundation. Ordering several identical umbrellas usually works out more economically per unit than a single custom one.
Other factors are the plan shape, PVC or PVDF fabric and colour, clear height, the frame finish, drainage connections at each column, LED lighting, ground conditions and paving to be cut and reinstated, and the project location.
For a quotation, please send the area to be covered or the number and approximate size of umbrellas, the required clear height, photographs or a site plan, details of the ground or paving, and the location.
How We Design and Install Inverted Umbrellas
Because each umbrella stands on its own column and footing, work can usually proceed one umbrella at a time, keeping most of the area open while we install.
- Step 1 – Layout survey: We mark possible column positions, check for underground services and note drains, doors, bays and seating.
- Step 2 – Umbrella layout: We fix the number, size, shape, height and colour of the umbrellas and issue a layout drawing for approval.
- Step 3 – Engineering: Column, arms, edge cables and footings are designed for IS 875 wind on the canopy, and the drainage route is detailed.
- Step 4 – Fabrication: Columns and arms are made and coated in our workshop, and each funnel membrane is cut and welded with its central outlet.
- Step 5 – Installation: Footings are cast with anchor bolts and drain connections, columns are stood up and bolted, and each funnel membrane is clamped to the arms and pulled taut.
- Step 6 – Water test and handover: We check tension and alignment, test water flow through the column drain, and explain how to clear the outlet.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - Inverted Umbrellas
An inverted umbrella is a fabric canopy on a single central column, shaped like an upturned funnel with its outer edges raised. Rain collects at the centre and drains down through the column, so the canopy stays dry at the edges. They are used singly or in rows at building fronts, plazas, cafes and car parks.
Pricing is worked out per project from the umbrella size, the number of units, plan shape, PVC or PVDF fabric, clear height, frame finish, drainage connections, lighting, ground and paving conditions, and location. Share the area or number of umbrellas and a site plan with ShadeCo India for a quotation.
The funnel-shaped membrane leads rain to a central outlet fitted with a strainer. From there it flows down a pipe inside or along the column to the base, where it is connected to a storm drain or soak pit. The strainer should be cleared of leaves regularly, especially before the monsoon.
Yes, when it is engineered for the site. ShadeCo India designs the column, arms, edge cables and footing for wind from every direction as per IS 875 (Part 3). The footing is the key element, so its size is checked against the ground conditions at each column position.
Yes. Larger umbrellas are placed between rows of parking bays so each column takes up very little space and the driving aisles stay clear. The clear height is set for the vehicles using the car park, and each umbrella drains through its own column.
The steel column and frame have an expected structural service life of 25–30 years with periodic inspection. PVDF fabric carries a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms; PVC fabric life depends on the grade used.
Typical delivery is 3–6 weeks, depending on the number of umbrellas and how customised they are. Since each umbrella has its own footing, installation can move one unit at a time while the rest of the site stays in use.
Yes. Umbrellas can be set in a row or grid with their raised edges close together or overlapping, which gives near-continuous shade and rain cover along a frontage or over a plaza. Each unit still stands and drains on its own column.
