Badminton court shades, also called badminton court roofing, covered badminton courts, badminton court canopies or badminton tensile structures, are coated-fabric roofs on steel arches or frames built over one or more badminton courts. The membrane keeps out sun and rain while letting soft, even daylight onto the court, and side screens can be added to cut the wind that pushes a light shuttle off line. Schools, academies, clubs, housing societies and sports complexes use them to turn open courts into covered courts that can be played on all year.
ShadeCo India Private Limited is a badminton court shade manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install single-court covers, multi-court badminton halls, arched membrane court roofs, side-open court canopies, court covers with side screens and custom sports roofs, for a single court in a housing society up to multi-court halls for academies and sports complexes.
A badminton roof is planned around the game. The roof must be high enough over the court for high clears and lobs, the columns must stand outside the court and its run-off space, and the light falling on the court should be even, with no bright sun patches or glare from low sun. Because the shuttle is so light, we also look at how exposed the site is to wind, whether side screens are needed, and where floodlights for evening play will be mounted.

Why Badminton Courts Need a Roof
Badminton is the one racquet sport that is hard to play well in the open. Even a light breeze moves the shuttle, direct sun makes it difficult to track high shots, and a court surface left wet after rain becomes slippery and stays out of use for hours. In summer, outdoor courts get too hot for afternoon training, and court markings and synthetic or wooden flooring wear out quickly under sun and rain.
A tensile roof gives the court steady conditions. The membrane blocks direct sun and spreads daylight evenly so players can follow the shuttle, the waterproof roof keeps the floor dry, and side screens on exposed sites cut down drafts. Coaching sessions, school periods and evening games can then run to a schedule instead of depending on the weather, and the court surface lasts much longer.
Types of Badminton Court Shades
The right cover depends on the number of courts, the space around them and how sheltered the site is from wind.
Single-Court Badminton Cover
One court with its run-off space is roofed with a compact arched or gabled membrane structure. It suits housing societies, villas, schools and clubs that have one court to cover.
Multi-Court Badminton Hall
Several courts side by side are covered by one long-span roof, with no columns between courts. Academies and sports complexes use this layout for training and tournaments, often with spectator space along one side.
Arched Membrane Court Roof
Curved steel arches carry the membrane in a barrel shape, as in our photos. The arch gives the most height over the centre of the court, where high shots peak, and sheds rain to the two long sides.
Side-Open Court Canopy
The roof covers the court while the sides stay open for natural ventilation. It works well on sheltered sites, in campuses surrounded by buildings or where courts are used mainly for recreation.
Court Cover with Side Screens
On open or windy sites, fabric or mesh screens are added along the sides and ends to reduce drafts and block low-angle sun, giving more consistent conditions for coaching and competition.
Custom Sports Roof
Custom designs combine badminton with other sports, add seating or walkways, or match a campus building style. For roofs over other courts and grounds, see our sports shade structures.
Custom Badminton Court Roof Design: Height, Light and Wind
Height over the court comes first. The roof and any lights or bracing below it are kept clear of the space players use for high clears and serves, and the required height is agreed with the client according to the level of play, from recreational to competitive. Columns and bracing are placed outside the court boundary and its run-off area, so players can chase wide shots without any risk of running into steel.
Light and wind decide how good the court feels to play on. A light-coloured membrane spreads daylight evenly, and the roof is oriented, where the site allows, so that low morning or evening sun does not shine straight into players' eyes. Floodlights are fixed to the steel at positions that avoid glare along the line of play. On exposed sites, side screens are added, and rainwater is taken off the roof by gutters to drains well away from the court edge.
PVC vs PVDF Fabric for Badminton Courts
A badminton court must stay dry to be playable, so the roof is always a waterproof coated membrane. PVC and PVDF differ mainly in how bright and clean the roof stays, which affects the light on the court over time.
| Feature | PVC-Coated Polyester | PVDF-Coated Polyester |
|---|---|---|
| Dry Playing Surface | Yes, waterproof roof | Yes, waterproof roof |
| Daylight on the Court | Even, diffused light; dims as dirt builds up | Even, diffused light; stays brighter between cleans |
| Fabric Warranty | Depends on grade | Up to 10 years |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best For | Society, school and club courts | Academies and sports complexes with daily training and tournaments |

Benefits of Badminton Court Shades
Covering a badminton court turns it from a weather-dependent space into a reliable training and playing facility.
- Play in Any Season: Courts stay usable through summer afternoons and the monsoon.
- Easier to Follow the Shuttle: Diffused daylight removes harsh sun and shadows from the court.
- Steadier Shuttle Flight: A roof, and side screens where needed, reduce the wind that pushes shots off line.
- Dry, Safer Floor: Keeping rain off the surface helps prevent slippery patches.
- Longer Court Life: Flooring, markings and nets are protected from sun and rain.
- Evening Play: Floodlights mounted on the frame extend playing hours after sunset.
Applications of Badminton Court Shades
Schools and colleges cover their badminton courts for physical education periods, inter-house matches and coaching camps, and badminton academies roof multiple courts for daily training batches and local tournaments. Clubs and gymkhanas add court roofs so members can play in the evening and through the rainy season.
Residential societies and gated communities cover courts in their clubhouses and open areas, and resorts and hotels provide covered courts as a guest facility. Municipal and state sports complexes, corporate campuses and multi-sport centres use badminton court shades alongside other covered courts.
Badminton Court Shade Price in India: What Affects the Cost
The number of courts and the clear height required have the largest effect on the cost of a badminton court shade. Each extra court widens the span, and a taller roof needs longer, heavier arches or frames and larger foundations.
The choice of PVC or PVDF membrane, side screens, floodlight mounting, gutters and drainage, spectator or walkway extensions, foundation conditions, access for erection and the project location also influence the final price.
To price your project, we need the number of courts, the overall area including run-off, the clear height you need, whether the site is open or sheltered, photographs or a site plan, and the location.
How We Design and Install a Badminton Court Shade
Courts are often in regular use, so we agree the installation dates with the school, academy or society and protect the court surface throughout the work.
- Step 1 – Court measurement: We measure the courts and run-off, note the court orientation and surroundings, and check where columns can stand.
- Step 2 – Roof and height agreement: We propose the roof type, clear height, side screens and lighting points, and send drawings for you to approve.
- Step 3 – Structural design: Our engineers size arches, bracing, screens and footings for the court span and the IS 875 wind pressure at the site.
- Step 4 – Fabrication: Steel arches are rolled, fabricated and coated, and the roof membrane is patterned and welded in our workshop.
- Step 5 – Installation: The court surface is covered and protected, foundations are cast outside the court, then the arches go up and the membrane is pulled over and tensioned.
- Step 6 – Court handover: Our team verifies height, alignment, drainage and screen fixings, remove the floor protection and hand over care guidance.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - Badminton Court Shades
A badminton court shade is a coated-fabric roof on steel arches or frames built over one or more badminton courts. It keeps sun and rain off the court, spreads daylight evenly so players can follow the shuttle, and can be fitted with side screens to reduce wind on open sites.
The cost is calculated per project and depends mainly on the number of courts and the clear height, along with PVC or PVDF fabric, side screens, floodlight mounting, drainage, foundations and location. Send ShadeCo India the court count, area and required height for a quotation.
The roof must leave enough clear height for high clears and serves, with lights and bracing kept above that space. The exact height depends on the level of play, from recreational to competitive, and ShadeCo India agrees it with you before design so the roof suits how the court will be used.
A roof alone reduces wind over the court, but on open sites some drafts can still come in from the sides. In those cases fabric or mesh side screens are added along the sides and ends. The frame and screens are designed for the site wind load as per IS 875 (Part 3).
Yes. Multi-court halls use long-span arches or frames so that two or more courts sit under one membrane roof without columns between them. A heavier fabric of 1050 GSM or more is normally used for these wider spans.
Yes. Mounting points for floodlights are built into the steel frame during design. They are positioned to keep glare out of the players' line of sight, and the lighting load is included in the structural calculations.
The steel structure has an expected service life of 25–30 years with regular checks. PVDF fabric is covered by a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms, and PVC fabric life depends on the grade chosen.
Delivery is typically 3–6 weeks, depending on the number of courts and the level of customization. The court surface is covered and protected while the frame and membrane are installed.
