Project Overview
ShadeCo India Private Limited designed, fabricated and installed a set of tensile structures for the event lawn at NSOI, an Army establishment in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. The structures cover about 12,000 sq. ft. and were completed in August 2018.
The lawn is used for weddings, functions and parties. Open lawns are hard to use in rain or harsh sun, and temporary tents need to be put up and taken down for each event. A permanent fabric roof gives the lawn a ready, covered space for gatherings of every size.
Conical Canopies, Curved Roof and Entrance
The project combines three types of structure in one layout. Conical canopies stand over the main lawn, a curved fabric roof covers another part of the seating area, and a twin peaked canopy marks the entrance. Each shape covers a different zone, while the white fabric ties the whole lawn together.
All roofs use Serge Ferrari fabric of 950 GSM in a flame-retardant (FR) grade, which is important where large groups gather. The steel frames have a Duco paint finish and stand on new foundations. Udhampur sees cold winters and strong winds, so the frames were designed for wind loads as per IS 875 (Part 3) and for the hill climate.

Fabrication and Installation
The steel frames for all three structure types were made and Duco painted in our workshop. The fabric was patterned and heat sealed for each cone, the curved roof and the entrance canopy. Doing this work in advance kept the time spent inside the establishment as short as possible.
As NSOI is a defence site, every worker and vehicle entered with a gate pass and followed the security rules of the campus. On site, our team built the foundations, erected the frames and tensioned the fabric over about three months.
Project Result
The NSOI event lawn now has about 12,000 sq. ft. of permanent covered space for weddings, functions and parties. Events can go ahead in sun or rain, and there is no need to set up temporary tents each time.
