Project Overview
ShadeCo India Private Limited designed, fabricated and installed a tensile canopy over the outdoor cafe at Panjim Convention Centre in Panaji, Goa. The cafe canopy covers about 6,000 sq. ft. of open-air seating beside the building and was completed in March 2025.
Goa has strong sun for much of the year and very heavy rain during the monsoon. An open cafe with no roof can only be used for part of the day. The convention centre wanted a cover that would let guests sit outside in any season, without walls closing off the space.
Cantilever Canopy with a Curved Fabric Edge
The canopy is a cantilever structure, with the steel columns placed at the back and the roof reaching forward over the seating. This keeps the cafe floor free of posts, so tables can be arranged freely. Only the front fabric edge is curved, which softens the look of the canopy from the outside and helps rainwater run off.
The roof uses 850 GSM PVC coated polyester in an opaque blockout grade. Unlike translucent fabric, blockout fabric stops direct sunlight completely, giving the seating area deep shade on bright afternoons. New foundations were cast for the columns, and the steelwork follows IS 875 (Part 3) for wind loads.

Protection for Coastal Conditions
Salty sea air in Goa makes bare steel rust quickly. To protect the frame, we used an Asian Paints epoxy system: an Apcolite Advanced epoxy primer in grey under an Apcolite epoxy finish coat. Epoxy coatings form a hard, sealed layer that resists moisture and salt far better than ordinary enamel paint.
Fabrication and Installation
The steel frame was fabricated and coated in our workshop, and the blockout fabric was patterned and joined to fit the curved front edge. At the site, our team cast the new foundations, erected the cantilever frame and fixed and tensioned the fabric. The project took about two months.
Project Result
The outdoor cafe at Panjim Convention Centre now has about 6,000 sq. ft. of shaded seating that stays usable in midday sun and monsoon showers. The open front and post-free floor keep the space airy and easy to arrange for events.
