Cantilever fabric roof over a spectator gallery beside a cricket ground with no columns in front of the seats
Tensile canopy over players' dugout benches at the edge of a football field

A sports pavilion tensile structure is a fabric roof over the spectator gallery, players' area or VIP enclosure at a sports ground. It is also known as a sports gallery shade, pavilion stand roof, spectator canopy or dugout shelter. It is used at cricket grounds, football fields, school and college sports grounds, sports clubs, academies and district stadiums.

ShadeCo India Private Limited is a sports pavilion tensile structure manufacturer and supplier in India. We design, fabricate, supply and install cantilever gallery roofs, players' dugout canopies, clubhouse pavilion roofs, step gallery canopies and ringside viewing shelters. Fabric options include PVC, PVDF and PTFE-coated fabric for rain cover, and HDPE shade net for shade-only stands.

Planning starts with the view from the seats. We check where the field, pitch or court lies and where the sun sits during match hours. Then we place supports so no spectator looks at a column instead of the game.

Why Choose a Sports Pavilion Tensile Structure

A sports pavilion tensile structure lets spectators, players and officials watch a full match in shade. Matches often run through the hottest part of the day, and open galleries empty out by afternoon. A roof over the stands keeps the crowd and the atmosphere through the game.

Fabric suits sports grounds because it spans wide with few supports. Cantilever roofs keep columns behind the seats, so every spectator gets a clear view. The roof also gives the ground a proper pavilion look for tournaments and events.

Types of Sports Pavilion Tensile Structures

The right pavilion roof depends on the seating layout, the sport and where the sun falls during play.

Cantilever Gallery Roof

Columns stand behind the top row, and the roof reaches forward over the seats. Nothing blocks the view of the field. It suits cricket and football stands at clubs and schools.

Players' Dugout Canopy

A low canopy covers team benches beside the field. It shelters players and staff while keeping their view of play open.

Clubhouse Pavilion Roof

A roof covers the members' or VIP area near the clubhouse, often with a scorer's box or commentary point. It gives the ground a clear main stand.

Step Gallery Canopy

A long canopy runs along concrete steps used as seating beside a field. It is a simple, low-cost way to shade a large crowd at school and college grounds.

Ringside Viewing Shelter

Small shelters line courts, tracks or arenas for officials, coaches and families. For roofs over the playing area itself, see our sports shade structures.

Custom Pavilion Design: Sightlines, Sun Direction and Ball-Strike Zones

Clear sightlines come first. We draw lines from each seat row to the field and keep columns and roof edges out of them. Cantilever roofs are preferred where the gallery faces the main action.

The roof is turned to block the sun during match hours, especially in the afternoon. We check the field's direction and the times of matches before fixing the roof depth. A deeper roof covers more rows when the sun is low.

Balls hit into the stands can strike the roof. Heavier coated fabric is used where hits are common, and edges are kept high and tight. Rain is led to gutters at the back, away from players and the field edge.

These details are a general guide for sports clubs, schools, academies and sports departments. The final roof depth, height and fabric are confirmed after we see the seating and the field.

Benefits of Sports Pavilion Tensile Structures

A pavilion roof keeps the crowd comfortable and the view clear for the whole match.

  • Clear View of Play: Columns stand behind seats, not in front.
  • Full-Match Comfort: Spectators stay in shade through the afternoon.
  • Covered Dugouts: Players and staff rest in shade beside the field.
  • Proper Pavilion Look: A roofed stand gives the ground a tournament feel.
  • Built for Ball Hits: Heavier fabric grades suit ball-strike zones.
  • Club Colours: Fabric and frame finish can match the team or club.

Applications of Sports Pavilion Tensile Structures

Cricket grounds and sports clubs use pavilion roofs over spectator stands, members' areas and dugouts. Schools and colleges shade step galleries along their main grounds. For roofs over large stadium stands, see our stadium tensile structures.

Football fields and academies cover benches and small stands. Athletics tracks, kabaddi and hockey grounds use ringside shelters for officials and families. District sports complexes use pavilion roofs over their main viewing areas.

Sports Pavilion Tensile Structure Price in India: What Affects the Cost

The cost of a sports pavilion tensile structure depends mainly on the length of the stand and the depth of roof needed. Deep cantilevers need heavier columns and footings than two-sided frames.

Fabric grade, ball-strike protection, finish, lighting, scoreboard fixings and gutters change the figure. For pavilion roofs, PTFE fabric is the highest-cost choice and HDPE the lowest. Access for cranes on a finished ground may also need care.

How We Design and Install a Sports Pavilion Tensile Structure

A pavilion roof must protect spectators without spoiling their view, so sightlines guide each step.

  • Step 1 – Ground survey: We measure the stands, field edge and seating rows, and note the field direction and sun path.
  • Step 2 – Layout and drawings: We propose the roof type, depth, height and colours, with sightline sections from each row.
  • Step 3 – Engineering: Columns, arms and footings are designed for the cantilever and the site wind load as per IS 875 (Part 3).
  • Step 4 – Fabrication: Steel is fabricated and finished in club colours in our workshop, and fabric is cut to the stand length.
  • Step 5 – Installation: Work is planned between matches, with the field protected and the stand closed during erection.
  • Step 6 – Handover: We check sightlines, fabric tension and gutters, and explain off-season care.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions - Sports Pavilion Tensile Structure

A sports pavilion tensile structure is a fabric roof over spectator stands, dugouts or VIP areas at a sports ground. It keeps spectators and players in shade during matches. Columns are placed behind the seats to keep the view clear.

Cost depends on stand length, roof depth, fabric grade, finish and add-ons such as lighting. PTFE costs the most and HDPE the least for pavilion roofs. ShadeCo India quotes from seating size, ground photos and location.

PVC or PVDF-coated fabric is best if matches should continue in light rain. PVDF keeps club colours bright and is warranted for up to 10 years. PTFE suits long-life stadium-grade stands, and HDPE suits shade-only galleries.

Coated fabric keeps rain off, and gutters drain to the back of the stand. The cantilever frame follows the site wind load as per IS 875 (Part 3). Heavier fabric grades are used in common ball-strike zones.

With off-season checks, a pavilion's steel frame is expected to last 25–30 years. PVDF fabric on sports stands carries a warranty of up to 10 years, subject to the manufacturer's terms.

No. Cantilever roofs place all columns behind the top row of seats. We check sightlines from each row before design, so roof edges stay out of view.

A sports pavilion roof is usually delivered in 3–6 weeks, depending on stand length and design. Site work is planned between matches or seasons.

Pavilions are best placed so the sun is behind spectators during match hours. Where the stand already exists, we size the roof depth to block the afternoon sun. We check the ground's direction during the survey.
