A retractable awning is a fabric awning fixed to a wall that rolls out on folding arms to give shade and rolls back when it is not needed. It is also known as a folding-arm awning, roll-out awning, retractable sunshade or motorised awning. It is used over patios, terraces, balconies, café seating, shopfronts and windows at homes and businesses.

ShadeCo India Private Limited is a retractable awning manufacturer and supplier in Delhi NCR. We design, fabricate, supply and install open folding-arm awnings, semi-cassette awnings, full-cassette awnings, drop-arm awnings and shopfront awnings with printed valances. Each awning is made with acrylic, polyester or PVC-coated polyester fabric, on an aluminium, powder-coated mild steel or stainless steel frame.

Planning starts with the wall. The roller and arms pull hard on their brackets when the awning is open, so we check for an RCC beam, column or solid wall to fix into. Then we agree the width, how far the awning should reach and whether it will be worked by hand crank or motor.

Why Choose a Retractable Awning

With a retractable awning, shade is something you switch on and off. You can open it in the afternoon sun and roll it back in winter, so rooms and patios still get sunlight in the cooler months. A fixed cover cannot do that.

It also protects the awning itself. Rolled back, the fabric and arms are out of the way of strong wind and heavy storms. For cafés and homes, it is a neat way to add a shaded outdoor area without building a permanent roof.

Types of Retractable Awnings

The right retractable awning depends on the wall, the area to shade and how protected you want the fabric to be when closed.

Open Folding-Arm Awning

The roller and folded arms sit on brackets without a cover. It is the simplest and most economical retractable awning, suited to covered walls and balconies.

Semi-Cassette Awning

A top cover shields the rolled fabric from rain and dust from above. It suits walls that are partly exposed to the weather.

Full-Cassette Awning

When closed, the fabric and arms tuck fully into a slim box. It looks neat on modern homes and keeps the fabric cleaner for longer.

Drop-Arm Awning

Straight arms hinge down from the wall instead of folding out. It suits windows and balconies where the shade needs to drop in front of the opening.

Shopfront Awning with Valance

A front flap carries the shop's name or logo. For larger roll-out fabric roofs on guide rails, see our retractable tensile roofs.

Custom Retractable Awning Design: Wall Fixing, Reach and Pitch

The brackets carry the whole awning, so they go only into an RCC beam, column or solid wall. Hollow blocks and plaster are not used for fixing. Where the wall is weak, a support frame can carry the brackets instead.

The awning's reach is set by the area to shade and the height of the wall above it. We keep the front bar high enough for people to walk under. The arms are set at a pitch, so rain runs off the front edge instead of collecting on the fabric.

Fabric choice depends on how the awning will be used. Acrylic folds and rolls easily and is the usual choice for retractable awnings, while PVC-coated polyester is fully waterproof but heavier. Polycarbonate sheets cannot roll, so they are used for fixed awnings only.

Benefits of Retractable Awnings

A retractable awning gives you control over sun and shade, day by day.

  • Shade When You Want It: Open it in summer, roll it back in winter.
  • Cooler Rooms: Shade on windows and doors keeps rooms cooler.
  • Protected When Closed: Rolled fabric is safe from storms and dust.
  • No Permanent Roof: The wall stays clear when the awning is closed.
  • Easy to Operate: Hand crank or motor with a remote.
  • Brand Display: Shops can print their name on the valance.

Applications of Retractable Awnings

Homeowners fit retractable awnings over patios, terraces and balconies to shade seating in summer. Villas use them over large windows and glass doors to keep rooms cooler. For fabric shade over gardens and open patios, see our patio shade sails.

Cafés and restaurants use them over outdoor tables, opening them at lunch and rolling them back at night. Shops and showrooms use them over display windows to protect goods from sun. Offices fit them over terraces and breakout areas.

Retractable Awning Price in Delhi NCR: What Affects the Cost

The cost of a retractable awning depends mainly on its width and reach. Wider awnings need longer rollers and stronger arms.

Fabric type, cassette style, manual or motorised operation, frame material, wall fixing work and valance printing all change the figure. Motorised awnings and full cassettes cost more than open, hand-crank models.

For a quotation, share photos of the wall and area, the rough width and reach you need, your choice of manual or motor and the location.

How We Design and Install a Retractable Awning

A retractable awning moves every day, so the wall fixing and the arm setting matter most.

  • Step 1 – Site visit: We measure the wall and the area to shade, check for beams or columns and note power for a motor.
  • Step 2 – Selection: We help you choose the awning type, fabric, colour, frame and operation.
  • Step 3 – Wall and fixing check: We confirm the brackets can be fixed into strong structure and plan any support frame needed.
  • Step 4 – Fabrication: The roller, arms and frame are prepared, and the fabric is cut and stitched to size.
  • Step 5 – Installation: Brackets are fixed, the awning is mounted and the arms are set to the right pitch.
  • Step 6 – Handover: We test opening and closing, set the motor limits and show you how to use and care for it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions - Retractable Awning

A retractable awning is a fabric awning fixed to a wall that rolls out on folding arms for shade and rolls back when not needed. It can be worked by hand crank or motor. It is used over patios, terraces, balconies and café seating.

The price depends on width, reach, fabric, cassette type, frame and manual or motorised operation. ShadeCo India quotes after seeing photos of the wall and knowing the size and location.

Acrylic awning fabric is the usual choice because it folds and rolls easily and is water-repellent. Polyester costs less. PVC-coated polyester is fully waterproof but heavier.

It can be used in light rain if it has enough pitch for water to run off. It should be rolled back in strong wind, storms and very heavy rain to protect the fabric and arms.

Yes. A motor with a wall switch or remote makes wider awnings easy to open and close. Smaller awnings can be worked by a hand crank.

The reach is set by the area you want shaded and the height of the wall. We measure the space and suggest a width and reach that suit it.

From order to fitting, it typically takes 3–6 weeks, depending on the awning size and options. Fitting on site is usually done in a day.

A retractable awning rolls back when not needed and opens for shade. A fixed awning stays in place all year and can use polycarbonate sheets as well as fabric.
